Mkhuhlu residents insist on a new bridge

The residents of the village are unhappy with the shoddy construction work on the bridge.

A lack of proper road infrastructure, especially some bridges in certain areas in the province, remains a big concern to community members.

Residents of Mkhuhlu Trust Ntsemamarhumbu are among those affected by this situation.

They have voiced their concern on the terrible state of their bridge in the village, and say that something needs to be done for their sake.

According to one of the residents who chose to remain anonymous, the bridge was poorly constructed and its condition has been deteriorating for a long time. He said the situation is worsening every time it rains.

“When it rains, the water level is so high, which makes it difficult for schoolchildren to cross, and they are unable to go to school. The parents accompany their children who are enrolled at Emapaleng Primary School to help them cross the bridge. Then in the afternoons, they wait at the bridge to make sure that their little ones cross the bridge back safely.

“The bridge has been like that for a long period of time and still today it has not been fixed. We reported the matter to the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality and a local councillor, but nothing is done to fix the problem. Instead, they just remove the sand under the bridge which does not help with the situation. We need a higher bridge we will be able to cross safely even if it rains.”

The spokesperson for Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, Claiton Khoza, said the municipality is working on addressing the problem.

“The municipality has a plan in place to construct culvert bridges for all low-lying bridges in the next financial, and Mkhuhlu is one of the regions.

The delay is as a result of the Covid-19 emergency, wherein much of our resources was directed to deal with Covid-19 challenges.”
