Businessman gunned down in cold blood

Matsulu based businessman, Abel Mavuso, was shot and killed execution-style in front of his house on Saturday afternoon.

MATSULU – According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, investigations have already ensued to determine the motive behind Mavuso’s killing.

“We can confirm that Mavuso was shot and killed on Saturday by unknown suspect(s), who after the incident fled the scene using Mavuso’s vehicle,” confirmed Mohlala. He said police and paramedics were alerted and upon their arrival, Mavuso was declared dead on the scene. The getaway vehicle was found abandoned somewhere in Matsulu later the same day.

“The police are trying to comb together pieces of evidence and hopefully to establish the motive behind this killing. We don’t want to speculate at the moment, but we can never rule any possibilities out,” said Mohlala.

Mavuso was a known business mogul whose ventures thrived even during the peak of the apartheid era. He was one of the few black entrepreneurs from this township who started from rags and went on to accumulate wealth. He owned a number of businesses and properties, including a large farm outside Low’s Creek, on which he grew up.

Mavuso’s killing follows after Zwelithini Ray Dlamini, the son of Chief Tikhontele Dlamini of the Lomshiyo Royal Authority based in Matsulu, was also shot and killed execution-style in January last year.

Dlamini was allegedly shot 13 times in his house as he was enjoying a meal with friends. Mohlala appealed to the community to help the police with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“Community members are our strategic partner in the fight against crime and we need them to come forward with anything that may assist us,” he appealed. “The police have opened a case of murder and we have launched a manhunt for the suspects.”
