Construction of collapsed Tekwane bridge is on track

The construction of the Tekwane Bridge on the D2296 linking Tekwane South, Entokozweni and KaNyamazane, which collapsed during the heavy storm in February, is continuing as planned.

TEKWANE SOUTH – This is according to the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, which is responsible for this particular road. According to the department’s spokesperson, Bongani Frederick Dhlamini, the contractor has so far started with excavations and concrete work as part of the engineers’ timeline.

The department was reacting after yet another heavy rainfall on Friday night washed the two bypass bridges away created to link these townships. “However, the heavy rainfall these past few weeks has contributed to the minor delays, and the contractor will revise the work schedule to finish the construction of the bridge within the six-month timeframe as per the contractual agreement.

The department is requesting the affected communities to work hand in hand with us so that there are no delays and unnecessary disruptions,” said Dhlamini.

He confirmed that the contractor had agreed to fix the damaged bypass next to the bridge, too, so that the communities of Tekwane South, KaNyamazane and Entokozweni can use it. “We therefore humbly request motorists to use the N4 while the bypass is being fixed. Any concerns should be directed to the community liaison officers, rather than disrupting the work of the contractor, which might cause more delays, apart from the rainfall expected during this season,” said Dhlamini.
