Young karatekas awarded

Sifiso Sindane, the chief instructor and organiser, said it was important to have this event to assess whether the students had mastered all the techniques.

The Universal Shotokan Karate Union Lowveld Youth Development Club recognised their karateka students for their hard work. They received certificates and trophies during their grading ceremony at Tekwane South on Saturday November 6.

The event was sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission. Sifiso Sindane, the chief instructor and organiser, said it was important to have this event to assess whether the students had mastered all the techniques. “Karate is similar to an academic school as it also has a formal curriculum, hence the grading. Some of the categories recognised were best improved karateka, best disciplined and best disciple.

This event was about the evaluation of the students where they must prove they can coordinate the brain and body. This is because karate is about discipline, coordination of the mind and the muscles which is a lifetime process.”

According to Sindane, he was happy that most of his students are girls as they need learn self-defence. “The majority of my students are females since we have come to realise that women and girls are victims of gender-based violence (GBV). I hope and pray that I have more children to teach from our townships as that will help us reduce or eliminate the abuse of drugs, alcohol and teenage pregnancy,” he said.
