Karino Interchange on N4 now 87% complete

Even though construction work on the N4 has been delayed due to certain challenges, TRAC is aiming to complete projects around the city by December.

According to Solange Soares, the spokesperson for TRAC, the new Karino Interchange is now 87% complete.

This project, previously valued at R390m, will see the existing intersection transformed into a grade-separated interchange with on- and off-ramps, as well as a bridge that will separate cross traffic from through traffic to ease traffic flow at the intersection.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, like the weather and additional lockdown measures, there have been slight delays. Should the project be further affected by matters beyond our control, we anticipate the latest it will be completed is February 2022,” said Soares.

She said paving of asphalt on the ramps, the mainline carriageway and final finishing works still have to be done.

“TRAC will endeavour to have the N4 and the bridge open before or by the festive season. However, this may change should there be more unforeseen challenges experienced. Should this be the case, TRAC will deploy additional pointsmen with more frequency during high traffic volume periods in order to improve traffic flow.”

Construction work in the area near Kaapmuiden will be finished by the end of November, said Soares.

“The road in this section, including all lanes, is open and operational, however. Only final finishing works are being done now.”

This project is run by Tau Pele Construction and includes upgrading the carriageway to four lanes and rehabilitating the existing road, which stretches over a distance of 15.5 kilometres.
