Tekwane South residents given houses

The houses are part of the Integrated Human Settlements Project by the City of Mbombela.

Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi Ngubane and MEC Speedy Mashilo of the Department of Human Settlements handed over houses to beneficiaries at Tekwane South Ext 2 on Tuesday.

This programme is part of the minister’s ongoing visits to provinces to ensure government cohesiveness to unblock challenges and give dignity to the people through human settlements.

Accompanied by the mayor for the City of Mbombela, Sibusiso Mathonsi, they visited various areas before handing over the house.

They visited KaNyamazane families that had been affected by a storm disaster, and inspected the land in Msholozi. During this inspection, Kubayi Ngubane said, “Within the informal settlement of Msholozi, the land has been approved for human settlement; this is a major landmark for this municipality.

This is because many people, including the municipality, have been trying to spend money in that community without being assured that the land would be given to the municipality. A lot of developments will be done in that area and I hope communities will be happy with this progress.”

In KaNyamazane they visited the home of Koos Masilela. “We have managed to visit the areas that were hit by the storm disaster.

One of the issues is to repair the houses which roofs had been blown away.

“The feedback we are getting from those communities is that most of them have houses with asbestos roofs. We are looking for a resolution so that they can be repaired. We want to appeal to the communities that it is not safe for them to repair the houses on their own. We want to appeal to them to be patient; we will be coming to remove the asbestos. We will communicate in due course,” she said. The beneficiaries in Tekwane South were glad to receive their houses.

Themba Nkosi, a military veteran, is one of the beneficiaries in Tekwane South. “I am very happy with what is happening today as I receive this house from the government as a veteran of Mkhonto we Sizwe. I want to say thank you for this house,” he said.
