MEC Shongwe calls for arrest of cop killers

The Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has called on the police to work around the clock to urgently arrest suspects linked to the killing of a police officer on Saturday night July 24.

The officer in question was attached to the Tactical Response Team in eMalahleni. According to police information, the officer was shot and killed at his home on Saturday night.

The police received a call about one of its members being shot, and efforts were made to rush him to the hospital, but he succumbed. Shongwe has condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms.

He appealed to members of the public who may have information regarding the case to come forward and assist the police to bring the culprits to justice.

“Such callousness should never be allowed to thrive in any society. Communities must respect the police, because they are our last line of defence in the fight against criminals. We must help the police to urgently bring to book those who are responsible,” pleaded Shongwe.

He has called on the police and law enforcement officers to remain undeterred in the fight against crime.

“Such acts of cowardice should not discourage our law enforcement officers. They must remain resolute and be spurred on to make our communities safer,” he continued. He visited the family of the slain officer on Tuesday, personally conveyed his condolences and assured them they would leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to book.
