MEC for education welcomes appointment of new HOD

The provincial MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, welcomed the full-time appointment of head of department (HOD), Lucy Moyane.

Majuba said the newly appointed HOD brings with her a wealth of experience in the education sector, having served in the highest leadership echelons of the department for a number of years.

“My view is that the decision to appoint Moyane is good for the department, for the province and for our country at large with regards to fostering continuity, as well as the semblance of order and stability within the department. It is worth celebrating, because she has been around the department for some time. She grew within the system and was able to traverse sector. We can say without any fear of contradiction that her intellectual tenacity, prowess, and down-to-earth personality coupled with her rich institutional memory serves as a central pillar to propel the department to much greater heights,” said Majuba.

Majuba was addressing his senior management unit within the department yesterday during the MEC’s extended senior management meeting. Moyane first came into the picture when there were serious challenges in the province relating to the performance of learners, the management of assessments and a fluid management structure.

These challenges impacted negatively on the overall corporate image of the department, public confidence and trust.

“Today, the status quo has improved and changed for the better, and it is only fair and just that we attribute the departmental meticulous ways of this achievement to her contribution, among others. Indeed, she did not only singlehandedly make such contributions, but was a true leader and team player. She has over the years demonstrated a rich history and an amazing talent that we are honestly convinced will do the department a lot of good going forward,” continued Majuba.

He further said the department must work hard to reclaim its position of performing above the 80 per cent pass rate.

“The department will convene winter school classes and spring classes to add impetus to the quests of improving the results. I request that planning of these classes be done effectively, considering the Covid-19 situation and the objectives of these sessions.”
