Women band outside court to demand an end to gender-based violence in Masoyi

They also demanded equal treatment of the Masoyi Periodical Court regardless of one’s position in the community.

Two groups of women, including the ANC Women’s League and the Positive Women’s Network, picketed today outside the Masoyi Periodical Court against the rise of gender-based violence in the area.

“We demand justice for all victims of abuse,” they said. One group was in support of the 30-year-old royal wife, now estranged, who had allegedly been assaulted by her husband on March 6.

The women called on the police to thoroughly investigate issues of gender-based violence. They also demanded equal treatment of the Masoyi Periodical Court regardless of one’s position in the community. The protesters demanded the court to thoroughly deal with the case against the local chief. “How will he gain respect if he assaults women? He needs to lead by example,” said Mildred Khumalo, a protestor. The case against him was postponed to May 5 for further investigations.

The other group of women was supporting a local member of the mayoral committee, Lizzy Nyalunga, who was allegedly stabbed in her face by a teenage boy as he demanded clean drinking water in Mahushu on January 15. The accused, Thabo Mlotshwa, briefly appeared in court. He was released on R1 000 bail. The matter was postponed to May 14.
