Wife of accused traditional leader arrested for breaking sliding doors in Masoyi

Leaders should set good examples and be role models in their community.

Drama unfolded in the Masoyi Periodical Court on Tuesday during the court appearance of a traditional leader accused of abusing his 30-year-old wife.

The suspect’s wife was apparently arrested in full view of court attendants for allegedly breaking sliding doors at the royal house. She briefly appeared in court. She was granted R300 bail. The suspect also appeared in the same court on charges of common assault. The matter was postponed to April 30 while investigations continue.

Outside the court, Phindile Hlatshwayo, the victim’s aunt, said they were shocked by the events in court.

“They said she will be released once she paid the R300 bail. Our question, however, is why was she not alerted about the case before coming to court?”

Members of the ANC Women’s League from various areas around the White River- Hazyview area braved the chilly weather to picket outside court. They demanded the law to take its course for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Thandiwe Mohlala, the coordinator of the Women’s League in the Hazyview Regional Task Team, said leaders should set good examples and be role models in their community.

“It is uncalled for that leaders misuse their powers and disregard the rights of women the way the suspect did. He should have known better that no one is above the law. We believe the justice system will punish him accordingly,” concluded Mohlala.
