Inkhosi Sandile Ngomane condemns abuse against women and children

We condemn such behavior in all possible ways. As traditional leaders we are well trained on issues of gender-based violence and don't expect any of us to commit such crimes.

The chairperson of the provincial House of Traditional Leaders, Inkhosi Sandile Ngomane, has condemned the recent alleged assault of a young queen by her husband, a traditional leader of a tribal council.

“We were so horrified as the house of traditional leaders to learn of such a behavior by one of our own. We condemn such behavior in all possible ways. As traditional leaders we are well trained on issues of gender-based violence and don’t expect any of us to commit such crimes. We don’t take any men who abuse any women and children serious,” he said.

Ngomane said traditional leaders in the province regularly meet with the Commission for Gender Equality to be well equipped on such issues. “It is a pity that that this happened. We won’t interfere with the justice system; we believe that it will take its course. This is one in a million cases that we ever had and we hope that it won’t happen again in our province,” he said.

Ngomane said he believed that women are fragile, beautiful vessels that needed to be loved, cherished, respected and cared for by real men.

Last Friday, the police arrested and charged the chief with common assault after he had allegedly assaulted his 30-year-old wife. Brig Leonard Hlathi, spokesperson for the police, confirmed the arrest.

“He briefly appeared in court on charges of common assault. He was released on R500 bail and his case will be postponed to March 30,” he said.

Lowvelder Express learned that the chief was also served with a protection order and his licensed firearm was confiscated. His wife left for her matrimonial home with her relatives and children on the same day.
