SAPS seek justice for slain sergeant, manhunt ensues

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, has ordered for a manhunt following an incident in which a 43-year-old police sergeant was shot and killed on the evening Friday March 5 at Gamotibidi Trust in Bushbuckridge.

Reports indicate that Sgt Dominic Monana, who was off duty at the time, was traveling in his vehicle with a lady friend. The two were accosted by about four armed suspects driving alongside, who had allegedly indicated to him that they needed to talk to him.

As he opened the window of his car, the suspects allegedly pointed firearms at him and demanded his firearm and cell phones. These assailants are said to have fired several shots at Monana. They allegedly pulled him and his friend out of their car, took his state firearm and two cell phones and fled the scene in his vehicle.

The police and medical personnel were notified of the incident, and Monana was certified dead.

The member’s friend was unharmed during the ordeal. A case of murder with an additional charge of car hijacking was opened and the police immediately mobilised all necessary resources to attend to the crime scene where a 72-hour activation plan was implemented to track the suspects, hence the manhunt. The hijacked vehicle was later recovered at Violet Bank near Bushbuckridge.

Monana was stationed at Calcutta Police Station before he met his untimely death. Zuma conveyed his condolences to the family and further indicated they would be given the necessary support by management. “I am confident that the prompt implementation of the 72-hour activation plan which includes experts from various environments in the police, will surely yield positive results and ensure that the suspects are put behind bars,” he said.
