Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane has announced plans to build a R350 million four-star hotel to help stimulate the local economy. She made this announcement during her much-awaited State of the Province Address on Friday.

Mtshweni-Tsipane said the hotel is a result of the public private partnership component within the District Development Model.

“Our partnership with the private sector is beginning to bear fruit. In Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, we will be working together with private sector partners to build this hotel.

“This public private partnership project has Akani Properties, a black-owned property development company, as a partner, along with the internationally renowned Raddison Hotel Group.

“The hotel will have a capacity of 150 beds and a convention centre with 1 000 seats. Part of the conditions of the award is that 10 per cent ownership should be local and 30 per cent of the construction work should be subcontracted to local businesses,” said Mtshweni-Tsipane.

She said this project will create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and permanent jobs once it is operational.

“For us to succeed in this approach, we must ensure that local wealth is not extracted out of our communities, but generated and recirculated locally. The sod-turning is expected by the end of this month,” she said.
