Some victims of the recent storm damages in KaNyamazane had been without food for a couple of days

Some victims of the recent storm damages in KaNyamazane had been without food for a couple of days..

57-year-old Grace Manyisa told Mpumalanga News yesterday that the last time she had eaten anything was on Monday.

The victims said they had been given takeaway foods every day from the day they were moved to old hostels at Thembeka Secondary School, but their last portion was on Monday.

“My shack was also affected by the storms near kaGezani and I joined the rest of the victims here, because I didn’t have anywhere to go, but the problem now is food. I last had my meal on Monday and I had to take my medication on an empty stomach since then. I am dizzy and afraid that something wrong might happen to me,” said Manyisa.

“We don’t know what happened, because the catering team including social workers last visited on Monday,” added Richard Ndlovu.

“It is clear that nobody cares about our welfare while we are here. We were hoping that our government was taking us to a better place on the day they removed us from our homes near the river, but it seems like they now want us to die from hunger or diseases such as cholera, as this place lacks water and the toilets stink,” added Ndlovu.

“I used to stay behind kaGezani and my shelter was damaged by the recent storms. I was told of the shelter made available for victims at the old hostels in Thembeka and I decided to join them. We were given takeaways everyday, but the last portion of food we received was on Monday. I had to take my medication on an empty stomach,” she said.

This publication learned that the victims were unemployed and had no means to help themselves. Comfort Ngobe, spokesperson of the Department of Social Development, said the matter was receiving attention from the department.
