Alleged fraudster arrested

The woman was arrested by the local police after she had attempted to buy a Multichoice decoder worth a R1 000 from a local furniture shop on January 27.

ELUKWATINI – A local 29-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit money worth more than R8 800.

The suspect, Ms Delisile Goodness Mkhonto was immediately arrested by the local police after she had attempted to buy a Multichoice decoder worth a R1 000 from a local furniture shop on January 27.

“An alert employee realised the notes were fake and applied delaying tactics while summoning the SAPS to the scene,” explained Const Peace Mbokane, spokesperson for the police.
Const Lucky Masondo and Const Gugu Shabalala swiftly responded to the scene and confirmed the cash was indeed fake.
“The suspect was also found in possession of more counterfeit money in her pockets and wallets which she said she thought was legitimate. When asked where she got the money from she claimed it was given to her by her boyfriend. She was then charged with possession of counterfeit money,” said Mbokane.

Mkhonto briefly appeared in the Eerstehoek Magistrate’s Court on
January 28 where her case was postponed for bail application today.

In another case, the local station celebrated its victory after a notorious 39-year-old criminal was successfully convicted and sentenced to 33 years in jail for housebreaking with the intention to rape, house robbery and theft.

Skheshe William Hlongwane was sentenced in the Carolina Regional Court on January 29. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Mbokane explained that Hlongwane previously tortured and evaded arrests for a long time until 13 December 2011 when he was cornered by a mob after one of his break-ins at Elukwatini.

Eerstehoek Magistrate’s Court on December 14 the same year, “From there he had been in and out of court,” said Mbokane.
The station commander, Col Jerof Thango expressed words of gratitude to detective Const JJ Sithole who handled the case.
