A 28-year-old unemployed mother needs help to provide her disabled child with a decent home.

A 28-year-old unemployed mother needs help to provide her disabled child with a decent home. Nkululeko Ngomane  lives with her two children, an 11-year-old son with a disability and an eight-year-old daughter. Her son cannot walk on his own or speak. “It pains me to see him lying around without any help. He is not attending school as I have failed to find a facility that would suit his condition,” she said. Ngomane said she attempted to enrol him at KaMagugu Inclusive School, but was told he needed to start elsewhere first.

“I came to terms with the fact that there is no place suitable for him except home. Unfortunately, I am not working and I cannot provide for all his needs. “We depend on the children’s grants, which is not enough to buy clothes, food and electricity, hence I decided to ask for help,” she said. Ngomane added that her attempts to register for an RDP house in 2017 proved fruitless as she never received feedback.

Nkosinathi Ndlovu, the secretary general of Disabled People South Africa, said parents of children living with disabilities must request information about the placement at special schools from their nearest circuit offices. She hopes that the challenges faced by these children would be dealt with after the completion of a boarding school in Barberton. “The province does not have a secondary school for learners with disabilities and we call on them to speed up the long-awaited special school in Barberton,” he said. Ndlovu urged parents not to hide their disabled children, but consider enrolling them at special schools for them to have a bright future.
