Words in poets’ mouths slammed to digital audience

“We are hoping that this will be seen by different people and they could join Words In My Mouth Poetry Slam. It is good to have new people joining,” he said.

Poets united during an audio open mic experience session on Saturday. The event was organised by Words In My Mouth Poetry Slam and held in the city.

According to the founder of Words In My Mouth Poetry Slam, Menzi Mkhonza, audiences were not allowed to attend the event.

“It was a closed session and only the invited poets went. The aim was to start documenting poetry and getting into the digital space. Lockdown has played a major role in us not being able to be out there in public or being able to do our open mic or slam league. The content that was presented is now in the digital space which will allow people to start engaging with us in a more open way. It is available on YouTube, Spotify and our podcast platform. The public will determine if the event is a success through the comments they will make after watching the performance,” Mkhonza explained.

He said these new platforms have the potential to bring them an income.

“For the past few years we have been running the sessions at a loss. For us to be sustainable business we need to figure out different business models.”

Mkhonza added it will also help them get new faces. “We are hoping that this will be seen by different people and they could join Words In My Mouth Poetry Slam. It is good to have new people joining,” he said.

Their next event, a slam week, will be a digital festival and it will have a programme that will address different issues.
