Singers unite over lockdown issues

Sidwell Mathebula composed a song addressing the Covid-19 pandemic and domestic violence.

Covid-19 cases are steadily rising all over South Africa. Cases have surpassed the 10 000 mark, and there have been more than 200 reported deaths. This is enough to put a strain on South Africa, but that is not all. Domestic violence rates have also skyrocketed during the lockdown.

In total, 2 300 grievances were reported to the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) during the first week of lockdown.

These alarming statistics have compelled local gospel artist, Sidwell Mathebula, and a collective of 13 other local artists to team up and compose a song addressing the Covid-19 pandemic and domestic violence.

“It is a very hard time for everybody. The pandemic has taken our lives and turned them upside down. There are people with no jobs, money and means to feed their families and this saddens me deeply,” said Mathebula. “The rise of domestic violence is alarming. Men should respect women, as they may not have the power to fight back. They should be protecting women and children instead of inflicting pain on them.” The song was written and produced by Mathebula and features Sifiso S, Thandeka Gee, Rashen, Fezile Moya, Scelo Khoza, Phindile Mashaba, Sylvester, Goodman Mgibe, Pretty Mhlongo, Mxolisi Mbethe, Phindile Makhabane, Martin Khoza and Sipho “Big Fish” Makhabane.

The song is titled “Sekwanele”, meaning ‘it is enough’. It was recorded at Church On The Hill at KaMagugu by Xolane Sithole at the XP production studio.

The song will be available on local radio stations from next week Wednesday and other online streaming platforms in two weeks’ time.

“The music video will be available within three weeks, as it is hard for us to shoot during lockdown,” clarified Mathebula.
