Farmers put together food parcels from their harvests to feed the hungry communities selected among the 43 villages within the municipality.

TONGA – Mpumalanga Farmers Association, in conjunction with Nkomazi FM today distributed 350 food parcels to destitute families around Nkomazi local municipality.

Led by Selby Mamba from the Mpumalanga Farmers Association, they put together packages comprising of mieli-meal, vegetables, tinned stuffs, salt, sugar and other food stuff for each family.

According to Mamba: “As farmers, we are making an intervention on the most vulnerable to hunger, which are deep rural communities, not only here, but we are spreading this initiative to all rural communities in the province. We believe that our products will help infuse ingredients to equip their immune systems to fight any infections, including the coronavirus.

“At the same time, we will supply them with seedlings to start food gardens as a continuity to food supply,” he stated.

Mamba also disclosed that their organization is working hand in hand with traditional leadership to identify vulnerable families within their chiefdoms.

“This is the beginning of bigger things to come from our organization because we aim at eventually establishing a textile industry with our cotton farmers within the province. At the same time, we will increase food production within to enable us to produce for both domestic and export industries. That initiative will also lead to many job opportunities within the agricultural industry,” he ended.
