Provincial police clamp down on crime during Covid-19 operations

Provincial commissioner, Lt General Mondli Zuma said generally, the crime rate has decreased.

SUNDRA- Security forces are up in arms to clamp down on crime and adherence to Covid-19 regulations, both at home and on the roads.

Provincial commissioner, Lt General Mondli Zuma said he believes the police are doing a good job following an incident  where a motorist was arrested after attempting to bribe the police.

“We also found alcohol being transported and we arrested the person. We’ve also turned around vehicles which were driven by people without permits between the two provinces.Basically, the enforcement of the Covid-19 regulations is visibly being executed here.”

Zuma also explained  that the collaboration also by the traffic officials, South African Police Service (SAPS) South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and health sector working together shows the seriousness of tackling the pandemic not to cross borders.

Asked on policing in the townships, villages and in and around town and how it has been managed thus far, he said, “We are focusing on the enforcement of the regulations. Generally, the crime rate has decreased with a huge percentage, including contact crime and rape. Be that as it may, we are not complacent, we are making sure that law and order is enforced in all areas of our operation together with the SANDF.”

“We are ensuring that people are at home as required by the regulations. Those who are out are part of essential services. But most importantly, we have roadblocks within those areas to exercise control of movement in terms of the Covid-19 regulations,” he added.
