#Day1: Homeless people taken off the streets

The Nelspruit Communtiy Forum will accommodate the homeless for the 21-day National lockdown.

MBOMBELA – 120 homeless people across the province were placed in shelters today for the period of the Lockdown.

That’s when the MEC for Social Development, Thandi Shongwe and her team took to the streets of Mbombela this morning in search of homeless people to rescue them off the streets and educate them on the coronavirus.

They were also placed at the Nelspruit Community Forum where they will spend the next 21 days during the national lockdown in the country.

She searched for them across all corners of the city in her most appealing manner as possible, withstanding some of their resistance to abandon their street life which is fraught with drug and liquor abuse, including criminality from some elements.

“It is heartbreaking to see people living on the streets even under such circumstances. As government, we will ensure that they receive three meals daily at the centre, bedding, toiletries and medical attention when necessary,” said Shongwe.

Shongwe promised to visit them regularly and would continue catering for them even after the lockdown.

While she was busy in the city, the rest of her team were engaged in the same campaign across many towns in the province.

“When the lockdown is over, we will not abandon you, but we will move you to suitable accommodation where the department will continue taking care of you all,” Shongwe promised them.
