Hawks searching for suspect who fraudulently got away with R3 million

The Department of Public Works allegedly paid R3 million into the account to settle a debt owed to the municipality. It was later discovered that the money was in fact paid into the alleged suspect's account.

MPUMALANGA – The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Mpumalanga is requests the public’s  assistance to identify a person in connection with fraud.

According to the Hawks, it is alleged that in 2013, an unknown suspect who claimed to work for the City of Mbombela Municipality fraudulently opened a bank account using false particulars. The Department of Public Works allegedly paid R3 million into the account to settle a debt owed to the municipality. It was later discovered that the money was in fact paid into the alleged suspect’s account.

“Our investigation with the footage obtained from the bank where the account was opened discovered that large cash withdrawals were made from ATM’s and inside various bank branches in Gauteng including Kempton Park, Ormonde, Sandton and other areas,” said the Hawks.
