Three women killed in R40 crash

The driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash was still missing at the scene.

Three people died on the R40 between Mbombela and Umjindi around 4.30am today.

The crash occurred when  a side swipe collission took place between a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a sedan. It is suspected that one of the drivers was attempting to overtake before the collision happened.

After the collision the vehicles then overturned on the bridge on the side of the road.

The driver of the SUV was seriously injured and was rushed to kiaat Hospital in Mbombela.

Earlier indications are that the drivers of both vehicles seemingly lost control after colliding and this led to vehicles veering off the road and overturning.

According to  Shabalala, today’s crash is one of many deadly crashes that could have been avoided if rules of the road were obeyed.

“We need to bring to an end needless loss of lives on our roads. It is unfortunate for us to be losing lives at this rate due to crashes that could be avoided,” the MEC said.
