Former Eskom employee sentenced to 12 years in prison for copper theft

Investigations linked the accused and his colleague to two incidents where they connived and issued authorisation tickets for copper cables valued at R 1.2 million

Former Eskom employee, Ziphozonke Daniel Ntuli (33) was convicted for two counts of theft by the Middelburg Regional Court on Thursday.

The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit arrested Ntuli and a colleague, Busisiwe Edith Mawela (37) in January 2018.

This is after investigations linked them to two incidents where they connived and issued authorisation tickets for copper cables valued at R 1. 2 million, to be removed from Eskom premises in Middelburg.

Ntuli was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for each count, and the sentence has been ordered to run concurrently.

Meanwhile the case against Mawela was postponed to July 26, 2019 for a trial date to be determined.
