A clean city is great art

Mbombela Arts and Culture Forum will host the first-ever Mbombela Environmental Arts Awareness Competition, which will run from July 30 until March next year.

The management of Mbombela Arts and Culture Forum (MBACFO) invites local artists to take part in an environmental awareness competition.

Artists will include hip-hop artists, producers and theater groups, who will be invited to an induction program at the Mbombela Civic Centre on July 30 from 10:00 until 16:00.

“We will host a workshop on what is expected during the competition, after which they will have to participate in our cleaning campaigns in different areas around Mbombela between August and October.

“We will, together with them, celebrate Arbor Week in September by planting trees at various institutions and churches as a way of promoting a green environment and nature conservation among communities,” said Percy Chibi, secretary of the forum.”

This project comes after the forum realised the hazards of illegal dumping sites in different areas in and around Mbombela.

“Illegal dumping pollutes the environment and needs all of us to play a part in stopping it before it is too late. We have decided to involve artists in this competition because of their significant role and influence in the community,” added Netto Maluka, chairman of the forum.

“This is why we chose artists to lead the way by using their skills in promoting safety and cleanliness in our society. We hope they can set a good example by promoting such in their music and theater productions.” Entry to the competition is free.

Drama groups will compete against one another on November 22, while hip-hop artists will have their competition on a day to be announced in December. The best will be chosen to compete on March 21, 2020. Artists stand a chance of winning lucrative prizes on the day.

MBACFO was established in 2005 as an umbrella body of artists in the City of Mbombela Local Municipality.

The organisation’s vision is to formalise the arts in Mbombela. So far, they have 37 performing arts organisations affiliated under MBACFO and 101 individual artists.

The organisation prides itself in its capacity for training and development.
