Taxi fares to increase on July 1

Taxi commuters are yet again to go deeper in their pockets as Top Star Taxi Association increase taxi fares by another rand in Mbombela.

Notice stickers found in most taxis informed passengers of this increase which is to take place on July 1. Passengers will now pay R19 from Kanyamazane, Tekwane South to Nelspruit. Those using taxis between Daantjie, Msogwaba, Tekwane North and Gedlembane will pay R20 into town.

Commuters from Mpakeni and Luphisi will pay R25. Fares in town will now be R11, while taking taxis to Kamagugu, Mayfern and Nelsville will cost R12, and R12,50 to Eplazini Kamagugu.

This morning passengers from White River and surrounds raised their concerns of a R3 hike seen in the notices between Mbombela and White River. “How is it possible that the fares can increase from R15 to R18? That’s too much,” said Poppy Mnisi.

Muntu Gama, provincial spokesperson for the South African Taxi Association (Santac
o), said the increase in petrol prices leaves the industry with no option but to reconsider and increase their fares. “We have increased by R1 in areas where we operate locally,” he said. Responding to the White River issue, Gama said, “There may have been a mistake made there, as prices increased with R1 only.”
