Dangerous inmate escapes from Barberton prison

Correctional services officials at Barberton Medium A prison are looking for an offender who escaped from custody last week.

Last Thursday an inmate escaped from Barberton Medium A’s bakery project where he was placed.

According to the spokesperson for correctional services at the Barberton facility, Messiah Hlungwani, the escapee is known as Collins Hlongwane.

Prior to his arrest Hlongwane was residing at Plot 106 Bahaad in White River.

“He was convicted in February 2008 for possession of a firearm and ammunition, attempted murder and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. On these offences, he was released on parole in 2013. While on parole he committed another crime and was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for murder,” said Hlungwani.

Before his escape, he was serving the sentence of murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as attempted murder. He was expected to be eligible for parole in 2029.

“The preliminary report indicates that the offender marched out of Barberton Medium A Correctional Centre with other offenders at 05:15 and reached the bakery at 05:30. Upon arrival, they went to the change room to wear the uniforms of bakery staff and he alone managed to escape, ” said  Hlungwani.

Fellow offenders informed officials about the incident, but Hlongwane managed to make his way out and vanish into the nearest bush.

His profile indicates that he is dangerous and community members are urged not to confront him but to inform the nearest police station or call the head of security, Mr Zulu Rabson on 082-080-1659.

The information gathered at the scene indicates that the incident took place while guards were in the bakery office and Hlongwane jumped over the court wall to escape.

The department launched an investigation to establish if this was a result of dereliction of duty or negligence by officials who were on duty.

Two officials who were in charge of offenders have since been suspended pending the investigations.
