South Africa loses bid to host Afcon to Egypt
CAF president Ahmad Ahmad made the announcement in Dakar, Senegal this afternoon.
South Africa will not host this year’s African Cup of Nation. This comes after the announcement in Dakar of the Confederation of African Football this afternoon. Egypt will be hosting the tournament four the fourth time since its inception.
Caf stripped Cameroon off to host the tournament due to being lack of readiness, resources to host the games. Cameroon is Afcon champions after they beat Egypt 2-1 at the Libreville in Gabon last year February.
Bafana Bafana will now switch their focus to their must-win clash against Lybia in March to qualify to be in the tourney.
Tweeps took to Twitter to express what they thought of the announcement:
South Africa must not host any major football tournament until #BafanaBafana can win 10 consecutive games. Is that too much to achieve?#AFCON2019

@RealMamadouGaye gave us the real reasons last year as to why Egypt will host the #afcon2019 tournament.
Nothing new here.
No one is sad.
Sad maybe for the so-called leadership of African football.
Good luck @CAF_Online and good luck to the CAF Headquarters, Egypt!! ✌🏼

We fail to fill up stadiums when bafana bafana or Psl teams are playing …who will go to stadium to watch Madagascar playing beside their fans ….Just give it to Egypt #AFCON2019

We can't always qualify by virtue of being hosts and still don't win NOTHING. "Home ground advantage" does not exist in our vocab.
Give that #afcon2019 to Egypt.
