10 speedsters arrested over the weekend along the N4 and R40 roads

The culprits were granted bail and will appear in court soon.

MBOMBELA – 10 speedsters who were driving around Mbombela and Ngodwana were arrested over the weekend on the R40 and N4 Toll roads. All drivers were males. One of them, a 44-year-old man was caught driving at 175 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N4 near Alkmaar.

Another 50-year-old male motorist was stopped on the R40 between Mbombela and White River driving at 147 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. On the same road, another driver was on the wrong side of the law when he registered 144 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

Three more culprits did not escape the law enforcers when they were brought to book for travelling at 160 m/h, 156 km/h and 143 km/h respectively on 100 km/h zone on the N4 near Schoemanskloof. They were all granted bail and will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile, road crashes across the province have already claimed 79 lives in 358 crashes between December 1 and 17. The number represents a reduction of 7% compared to the same period last year. Over 300 people sustained serious injuries. The Nkangala Region recorded 38 fatalities followed by Ehlanzeni with 26 road deaths and Gert Sibande registered 18.

According to the department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison most of the crashes occurred as a result of excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking and general disregard for traffic rules and regulations. Most of the accidents occurred mostly at night and on weekends in the early hours of the morning.
