Exchange old cards or risk losing January 2019 grant

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Mpumalanga has reminded social grant beneficiaries to immediately change their old cards for the new gold cards.

A spokesperson for Mpumalanga SASSA, Senzeni Ngubeni, said that the agency is concerned about the slow pace with which grant beneficiaries are coming for the old card swap.

“Only 42% has been migrated to the new SASSA card. All beneficiaries are reminded that if they fail to do the card swap before 14 December 2018, they are at risk of not getting their grants in January 2019,” Ngubeni said.

Ngubeni said while significant progress has been made in migrating beneficiaries of social grants from the old cards to the new cards, the agency is concerned that some beneficiaries are still holding on to the old cards, which have reached their expiry date.

She reminded beneficiaries that they have a right to choose their own preferred method of payment, which can be the new SASSA card or their own banking account.

Beneficiaries who are still in possession of the old card can do a card swap at their nearest SASSA or South African Post Office. They should bring along their green barcoded or smart card ID and the old card so that they can be issued with the new one. The process takes less than five minutes.

Beneficiaries seeking more information should contact SASSA’s toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11 from 8am – 4pm on Monday to Friday.
