Nehawu distances itself from injuring a police officer at UMP

Mpumalanga news learnt that the officer had been discharged from hospital this afternoon.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), together with the students of the University of Mpumalanga distances themselves from the injuries sustained by a police officer at the Mbombela Campus during a violent protest yesterday.

“The officer either got shot by private security or otherwise. The union is considering opening cases against the security officials and the Vice Chancellor for injuries sustained by workers,” reads a media release issued by Nehawu secretariat on Wednesday.

“As Nehawu, we reiterate our call to the Department of Higher Education and Training to take our demands seriously without any further delays. In this regard, the union will bus its members and students of the university to the office of the minister in Pretoria to demand for the response failing which all our members will be mobilised in different universities to render the system ungovernable as part of pledging solidarity,” reads the statement.

Mpumalanga News learnt that the Vice Chancellor Prof Thokozile Mayekiso visited the injured police officer in hospital today.He suffered head injuries.
