Runners take heed of motorists

I don't have anything against runners, walkers, joggers and cyclists. I do, however, have a problem when they want to take over the streets and roads and expect motorists to yield for them as they pace along the streets and roads.

Mr Teddy Ndlazi of Nelspruit writes:

At this time of year, we tend to make New Year’s resolutions about this, that and the other.

Almost without exception, we promise to do things better at home, at play and at work. Perhaps, the most popular and perennial one has to be living a healthy lifestyle and exercising more. This translates to running, walking, jogging and cycling in order to sculpt the perfect body. If doing any of the “ing” will give one Pallance Dladla’s (Jabu in Isibaya) six-pack or Boity Thulo’s bum then we shall do it. It is all good until we go out and start making things happen.

Outdoor exercising is great and gives one an unexplainable feeling, but it can be nasty if runners, walkers, joggers, cyclists don’t adhere to traffic laws and practice common sense. It is simple, folks! Rule number one: ride, run, jog and walk facing oncoming traffic. Rule number two: never ride, run, jog and walk side by side. Doing this makes life difficult for motorists. If you contest for space with cars you will always come second best. Always remember these words: cyclists are given 1,5 metres not the whole city. Unless you are in Cape Town where there are dedicated cycling lanes.

If these tips make your head spin, I recommend you try the Mbombela Stadium Precinct. It is a great area for outdoor exercising. It is safe, secure and has ample space for all your “ing” needs. Try it and you will love it. It is way better than trying the patience of motorists.
