Over 6000 motorists nabbed for speeding over the weekend

Among them was a driver who drove at 201 kilometres per hour in a 120 kilometres per hour zone on Sunday afternoon at Alkmaar. He appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court on Monday.

MBOMBELA – More than 6 400 motorists met the wrath of traffic officials for exceeding the speed limit on the roads.

Most of the offences were recorded at night and this further justifies the existence of the flexi shift, which they believe will go a long way towards drastically reducing crashes and violations by motorists.

Community safety, security and liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane has applauded the provincial traffic officers as they had their hands full over the weekend as they nabbed over 6 400 motorists across the province, with Ehlanzeni Region recording 4 671 speeding offences from Friday to Sunday.

Ngomane expressed concern that the high number of offences were recorded around Ehlanzeni, which is the region with the most tourist attractions. He said that law-enforcement efforts in this region need to be more intensified to address the challenges posed by this high number of violations.

He also welcomed the approval of the fixed speed camera sites by the National Directorate of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) effective from October 1, 2018. He said that the deployment of such cameras will also make a huge impact in reigning in of errant drivers who speed excessively, putting other people’s lives in danger.
