Eskom donates to charity organisation in Phola

Eskom Development Foundation CEO, Cecil Ramonotsi, says Eskom is committed to making a contribution towards helping South African communities become self-sustaining.

As part of Eskom’s efforts to plough back into the communities it operates in, Eskom, through its Development Foundation, has recently made a donation to Abanqobi Center, a non-profit organisation based in Phola, Mpumalanga. The centre supports orphaned and vulnerable children and beneficiaries who live in households where the only form of income is through the government’s social grants.

The Eskom Development Foundation, through the Kusile Power Station, which is in close proximity to the centre, has donated the following to the centre: arts and crafts sewing supplies as well as sports equipment including two netball posts, 12 tennis balls, 12 tennis rackets, soccer goalposts, six soccer balls, six netball balls, and three outdoor play rotor spins.

“As an organisation and a corporate citizen of South Africa, we are concerned about more than just keeping the lights on. We want to do our bit to help improve the socio-economic conditions of as many people as we can and we are proud to have been able to assist Abanqobi Center in its mission to uplift the community,” says Ramonotsi.

Abanqobi’s main objective is to help develop and build resilience in vulnerable children, especially orphans as well as capacitating their caregivers. They focus on developing the children’s reading skills and assist them to apply skills learned through various activities to improve their lives. The centre is equipped with computerised reading centres that allow the children to take part in reading programs.
