Ex reverses and kills toddler

It is alleged that the child’s mother ran away while the taxi driver rushed the toddler to hospital.

Pienaar police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a five-year-old was hit and killed by a taxi at Zwelisha on Sunday.

This happened after an argument between the taxi driver and the child’s mother – his ex-girlfriend.

According to Capt Jabu Ndubane spokesperson of the police, the incident happened after the taxi driver decided to stop and greet his ex-girlfriend who was walking with the toddler. The child was apparently fond of him when the two were still an item.

“The taxi driver started playing with the toddler, which angered the mother. She ended up hitting him with stones,” Ndubane explained.

She added that the child ran away from her mother and stepfather to hide from the stones. “When the mother refused to stop throwing stones at her ex, he ran to his taxi and when he reversed he hit the child who was coming from behind the taxi,” she said.

“The minor died before they could reach the hospital. The taxi driver proceeded to the hospital where the child’s body was taken into the state mortuary. He then drove to the police station to explain what happened,” she concluded. Police investigations still ongoing.
