No mercy for reckless drivers this Easter holidays

This is the stern warning issued by the MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Ms Sasekani Manzini who, especially is cautioning all road users particularly Public Transport Operators: buses, minibus taxis and freight.

Road traffic law enforcers will have no mercy against road traffic infringements during this coming weekend on all roads in the province.

She said the department will intensify its law enforcement operations as Public Transport Inspectors will be deployed throughout the Province. This will be done in partnership with various Law Enforcement stakeholders. The province is home to some of the busiest national routes such as N4, N12, N11 and Moloto Road (R573). The Department has observed common challenges during high traffic volume periods such as overloading, speeding, operating without licences and operating on unauthorised routes. Over and above the mandatory operating licences required in terms of the National Land Transport Association (NLTA), all public transport operators who will be ferrying commuters to churches and any other area of interest are urged to apply for Special Operating Licence for that particular route. Operators need to comply with all the rules of the road, ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy and avoid overloading and speeding at all costs. It is equally important that the driver is fit to be on the road and rests every two hours or 200 km of their journey to combat fatigue since it is one of the causes of road accidents.
