Police arrest three suspects for burglary and murder

Twenty men opened fire and killed a security officer during a Standard Bank burglary.

Police arrested three suspects in Hazyview following a shootout with the police and Hi-Tech security guards on Wednesday during a burglary.

In the early hours of the morning at about around 03:00 police received information about a burglary in progress at a Standard Bank branch at the Bushbuckridge Complex. It is alleged that the suspects gained entry through the roof and blew two ATM’s with explosives and managed to take undisclosed amount of cash.

Police and security guards responded to the crime scene and gun shots were fired by the suspects. Police retaliated and during the cross fire a security guard was killed by the suspects.

According to the Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi,  members of the Tactical Response Team and Hazyview police received information on the three arrested suspects aged between 37 and 52, originally from Middelburg.

“During the search they were found in possession of a lot of cash. Two LDV vehicles, a white Ford Ranger which was hijacked in Calcutta on Saturday and a white Toyota single cab which was used during the burglary were seized in Shatale. Police investigations led to another house where  R200 notes were found under a carpet and were also seized for further investigation,” said Sekgotodi.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Hazyview Magistrate’s Court today. Investigation continues.
