896 cases of malaria reported during festive season in Mpumalanga

Most of the cases were reported in Bushbuckridge with 499 followed by Nkomazi with 219 while Mbombela reported 152 cases.

The Department of Health in Mpumalanga recorded 896 malaria cases during December 2017.

Umjindi reported six while Thaba Chewu reported 15 cases. Others were reported from Nkangala district as imported cases.

The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Mr Gillion Mashego would like to advise people about an increase in malaria during this time of the season. The increase usually occurs during January to March. These months are usually peak months of Malaria transmission.

The symptoms of malaria include.

• Fever
• Flu like illness (fever, chills, sweating, and body pains)
• Headache
• Extreme tiredness
• Nausea and vomiting

Mashego urges people to visit their nearest health facilities to test for malaria.
