Taxi strike cancelled

Early this week, SANTACO issued warning to commuters to look for alternative transport as they were threatening with embarking on a protest.

MBOMBELA-The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has announced that their Friday protest has been cancelled following a meeting they had with Premier David Mabuza today.

SANTACO spokesperson in the province, Mr Mohamed Matola said they have reached several agreements with the premier concerning the issues they were complaining about. “Our meeting with the premier has yielded positive results.

Our premier has promised to assist the taxi industry in all the challenges we were raising. We really appreciate this way forward, since our initial aim was not to cause havoc but to ensure that our concerns are addressed,” he explained.

Among other issues they were complaining with include tenders of scholar transport in the province which they claim are given to companies from outside the province. They also want government to compensate them for their vehicles that were scrapped after being found operating with illegal licenses.

Matola said they have planned a meeting tomorrow with the leadership of the taxi council in the province to report on the agreement they had with the premier.

“We want to assure our customers that there is no need to panic anymore as things will be normal on Friday. We also want to appreciate the support they are giving to us,” Matola concluded.
