Working on Fire extinguishes blaze in Bushbuckridge

Working on Fire together with various Fire Protection Associations has placed firefighters on standby are ready to offer additional ground and aerial firefighting support.

A privately owned land caught fire in Bushbuckridge today. According to Working on Fire spokesperson Lebogang Maseko, it is not clear what caused the fire.

“We dispatched a team this morning, comprising of about 20 firefighters to assist with suppressing a fire on a privately owned land in Bushbuckridge. It is not clear what started the fire, however, our team has been battling the blaze for over two hours now,” said Maseko.

WoF has recorded five fires this week which were successfully extinguished. The South African Weather Service has issued a warning of high fire conditions in the northern interior of Mpumalanga, including the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo province.

Here’s what to do when faced with veld fires:
• Prohibitions of fires in the open air during periods of high fire hazard, and the establishment of fire control committees
• To control fires, an alarm system, firefighting teams, and beaters must be organised in advance and plans prepared
• Livestock should be moved out of grazing land to unbarred land/ploughed field for safety.
• Water is generally not available in sufficient quantities or at adequate pressure for the control of major fires; however, sand or other loose mineral soil material can be an effective method of control.
