Vodacom employees distributed food parcels in schools for Mandela

On July 18 the employees in Mbombela, assisted by volunteers, spent hours packaging the food, including canned beans, vegetables, jam, pilchards, tea, soup, mealie meal, stock and cereal.

On July 21 Vodacom employees distributed food packages at Enkambeni Primary near Hazyview.

This is in the spirit of helping to address social injustice in the country, and the company’s renewed support of the global movement for action against poverty in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day 2017.

Four schools from around the province were said to have benefited from this initiative.

Vodacom employees around the country, together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Gift of the Givers, Kaizer Chiefs FC, Blue Bulls, Wheelchair Basketball SA and the media, raced against the clock to pack as many food parcels as possible on Mandela Day.

This initiative forms part of a larger project facilitated by the Vodacom Foundation, building on its annual food-security drive in honour of Nelson Mandela International Day, launched in 2013.

This year, the project will see an estimated 50 000 buckets of nutritional food for children and families in need distributed to previously disadvantaged schools across the country.

A total of R5,2 million was spent on the packing and distribution of food parcels.

Chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Mr Sello Hatang, said “This year marks the 5th year, with Vodacom as a dedicated partner, helping to take Madiba’s legacy forward.”

Since the launch of the Nelson Mandela Food Packing programme in 2013, Vodacom employees and stakeholders have packed in excess of 193 000 food parcels.
