Mpumalanga Legislature celebrates Africa Day

MBOMBELA -Yesterday Day the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature held a special Sitting in celebration of the day where African Nations across the continent celebrates Africa Day.

The celebrations started with Africa Day Awareness Walk where the Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Mrs Blessing Thandi Shongwe was joined by Ms Ester Tondo, Consul for Mozambique in Mpumalanga, Members of the Legislature and members of the public from various neighboring African countries.

The day intended to bring back and reconnect the people of the continent as they struggle for a united, better Africa and a better world.

“Events like this demonstrate the good relationship of the two countries; Mozambique and South Africa. Undoubtedly, we view this day’s main purpose as to commemorate Africa, but it also remind us of who we are as particular countries and Africa in general. It also reminds us of our history and struggles, and to see the way forward to become more prosperous nations,” said Mozambican Consul Ester Tondo in delivering her message of support.

Mpumalanga Province shares borders with Mozambique and Swaziland which makes it of great importance to celebrate and honour this day together. Speaker Shongwe said this day “allows all in our diversity to pause and observe, celebrate and make reflection of the state of our beloved continent,”

“It is an occasion that demands from all of us to boldly and confidently assert: We are Africans! We are Africa! Africa is us! That Africans destiny is tied to each other,” This remains a defining feature of Africans on the Continent and in the Diaspora.” continued speaker Shongwe as she delivered the Key note address.

Speaker Shongwe further reiterated that it is important for the African brothers and sisters to embrace each other, saying the African countries played a major role in attainment of South Africa’s democracy.

She further called for a common continental commitment to respect strategic objectives as African unity and solidarity,democracy, peace and stability throughout Africa, cooperation to achieve sustained economic development, which would benefit the ordinary people of Africa.
Africa Day was celebrated under the theme: “Celebrating Africa Day, building a better Africa and a better world”.
