Passionate local DJ takes the music industry by storm

She says had she not quit her 9-5 job as a store manager to pursue her dream of becoming a DJ, she would not be where she is today.

Born Zodwa Matsebula and known as DJ Zoe, is rising to stardom and aims to nurture raw talent in the province.

Raised in the Kingdom of Swaziland and later moving to South Africa, DJ Zoe shares with us her journey in the entertainment industry :

What encouraged you in the club scene and what is it that led you to the industry?
Well, I grew up with a passion for music and I would not miss a single show especially when the big guys like Glen Lewis and others came to Swaziland. I wanted to play a set but I did not know where to begin until I met DJ Ganyani ten years ago. I got information of an academy in Pretoria where I could be a skilled DJ. I organised myself, packed my bags and hit the road. That is how bad I wanted this. Ganyani heard me play and he loved my set and I moved to Johannesburg and joined his stable. I have never looked back ever since.

How has the journey been so far?
I can safely say I’m doing well although the ride is bumpy at times. This industry has its perks and lows but I’m still going strong because I’m passionate about what I do. I dropped out of tertiary after I fell pregnant and later got a job at a Clicks store in Swaziland. Despite that, I knew where my heart was set. It has always been house music! I do not regret running away from home just to watch the likes of DJ Christos and Vinny da vinci play.

Any highlights?
I’ve made good friends and we have become family more than anything. There is also a new female DJ, Thuli P who plays Namhla on Generations who I had the pleasure to mentor. I was not even aware that she followed me on Instagram, but it fulfils me knowing there are people I inspire.

Tell us about the workshop you will be hosting this weekend.
The objective is to empower DJs, up-coming DJs, artists and event organisers. It will be hosted at Dream South Business Lounge where there’ll be motivation speakers including DJ Ganyani, Thuli P, Ligwalagwala FM’s Shabbisto, event’s organiser, Clifford Masinga and others. Those who want to be a part of it can join us this Saturday. There will be classes, motivation and an after party.

Any words of encouragement you have for aspiring DJs?
Knock on all doors! You may never know which door will open opportunities for you. There is rejection and a lot of deceit in the industry, but never give up!
