Barberton calm after riots

Situation is calm at this stage in this township after young people embarked on a strike on Tuesday.

BARBERTON – Police visibility is very high this morning in this township after community members embarked on a protest strike yesterday morning, barricading roads with burning tyres ,rubbish and big stones.

Mpumalanga News learnt that the protesters were complaining about a number of issues such as unemployment. Even though the situation is calm at this stage, but pupils did not go to school after they were forced out of their classrooms yesterday and forced to participate in the strike.

One of the learners from Barberton Secondary school, Bongekile Mwale said she was scared of the protesters because they are very rough.

“Today we were advised by the teachers not to come to school after what happened yesterday as unexpectedly, the protesters  came to our school and told us to join the strike. I don’t want to put my life at risk by going to school. They can start at any time because even late in the evening they were protesting in other sections,” she explained.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the provincial police, Sgt Gerald Sedibe told this publication that police are on the ground to monitor the situation even though the situation is calm.
