Rain brings vital relief but much more still to go before respite

The current rains are having a positive impact on dam levels

MBOMBELA – The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has warmly welcomed the rainfall experienced in most parts of the country.
According to the provincial spokesperson, Mr Themba Khoza, “The current rains are having a positive impact on dam levels, as there has been a noticeable increase.

It is crucial to understand that even though most parts of the country have been receiving rains and although the dam levels have slightly improved, they are not yet close to the desired levels.

“It is therefore important that the public continues using water efficiently and sparingly. Water conservation must remain a priority to all,” he said.
In Mpumalanga, the recent rains have led to a four per cent increase in storage levels, from last week’s 58,6 per cent to 62,6 per cent. Driekoppies Dam level increased from 20,6 to 22,4, Witklip Dam from 26,8 to 30,4, Kwena Dam from 32,0 to 34,9 and Inyaka Dam from 52,7 per cent to 60,5 per cent.
“We need to remember that water is life and it has no substitute. The public is urged to take extra precautionary measures during heavy rains to prevent the loss of precious lives and properties. We encourage everyone to take heed of the extreme weather warnings, and be sure to stay away from bulging rivers and low bridges during heavy rains, as these are usually accompanied by flash floods,” Khoza explained.
