The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be recorded in the national register for the abuse of older persons.
MBOMBELA- As we celebrate the 16 Days of Activism of no violence against women and children campaign, another rapist was handed a hefty sentence yesterday by the Nelspruit Regional Court.
The sentencing came after a 26-year-old accused, (name withheld to protect the identity of the victim) was found guilty for raping his 86-year-old grandmother.
It was reported in court that the the old lady was asleep at her home in Pienaar, when she was awoken by a noise. She then went to investigate and noticed that the kitchen door was wide open. She called his grandson, but there was no response and suddenly someone grabbed her from behind. She tried to scream for help but no one came to her rescue.

After the accused was done raping her, he stole a cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene. Police investigations led to the arrest of her grandson.He was sentenced to 24 years in prison for rape and a further three years for theft. Both sentences will run concurrently.
