Criminals terrorize community

The community alleges that a number of shacks and vacant houses in Msholozi are being used as hiding places for criminals

MSHOLOZI – A motorist lives in fear after his car keys were stolen during a recent housebreaking in Section A.

He told residents, who attended a crime-fighting community meeting on Sunday, that his family’s lives are now in danger. They are even afraid to park their car anywhere in town, as they do not know if they are being followed by the criminals. To make matters worse, he alleges that attempts to open a criminal case at the White River Police Station were fruitless, as an officer told him that the police would come to his house, yet after seven days, they have still not arrived.

The criminals target mostly clothes and groceries.
The community alleges that a number of shacks and vacant houses in Msholozi are being used as hiding places for criminals.

Cllr Kenneth Mkhonto, who attended the meeting, urged the community to form street committees and to use social media as a means to fight crime. “We have to work together to solve this issue. Get to know your neighbours and use WhatsApp groups to inform one another about any criminal activities,” he added.

WO Gugu Phiri, spokesperson for the White River Police Station, said they were not aware of the allegations. She adds that two people had been arrested for public drinking over the past weekend.
