Sassa beneficiaries no longer allowed to pay for funeral policies

The agency is pleading with those who have funeral policies which are currently been deducted from child support, foster care and dependency grant to contact their service provider to make alternative arrangements.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says as of December this year those receiving child support grants will not be allowed to use the money for services such as funeral policies.

The agency is pleading with those who have funeral policies which are currently been deducted from child support, foster care and dependency grant to contact their service provider to make alternative arrangements.

According to the agency spokesperson, Senzeni Ngubeni, it is a requirement for any beneficiary to ask permission for funeral policy premiums to be deducted from their social grant. The agency is urging all beneficiaries to submit a written mandate for the deduction of funeral policies to the nearest Sassa office.

“As an organisation, we respect that a funeral is an important practice in human nature and all people deserve to be buried in dignity. The agency is only allowing 10 per cent of the grant to be deducted for one funeral policy. Beneficiaries with direct deductions for a funeral insurance or scheme from child grants should note that the deductions will be discontinued in December,” said Ngubeni.

• Social grants to be paid early

Sassa said those who are receiving a grant for older persons, war veterans or a permanent disability grant and would like to have the premiums for their funeral policy or scheme deducted directly from their grant, should visit the nearest Sassa office to give a written permission.
