Department gives 97-year-old gogo special attention

NKOMAZI – A 97-year-old woman from Naas Block “A” will receive special consideration from the department of Human Settlement after her house got damaged in the recent hail storm.

Nkayasane Sibuyi’s house was one of the 400 that was struck by the storm that left many families stranded. The department’s MEC Mr Speedy Mashilo and Nkomazi mayor Cllr Thulisile Khoza visited the area to assess the extent of damage caused.
A number of 25 houses collapsed completely while the rest had their roofs blown off.

“At first I heard a loud bang, and then there was something that looked like a tornado. In few seconds the roof was gone. I couldn’t believe it when I saw my house without a roof. I didn’t know what to do. I just sat down and cried and my children were very scared. It really brings hope to me to see government official visiting us,” said Sibuyi.

Electrical power lines, schools, farms, health facilities and business facilities at Nass Block A, B, & C, Hhoyi, Masibekela, Dhludhluma, Schoemansdal, Mangweni, Steenbok, Magogeni, Langloop, KaMhlushwa, Jeppes Reef, Madadeni, Ngwenyeni and Phiva were also damaged.

“My heart goes out to all those who are affected by the storm including business and also would like to thank all government institutions for their response to rescue the residents of Nkomazi. “As a department we will quickly look at our emergency housing assistance programme to address these damaged houses” ” said MEC, Mashilo.
