St Marks take cup once again

Last year we lost out on the semi-finals and this year we are looking to go beyond that stage

St Marks High School, formerly known as East High Academy, successfully defended its Copa Coca-Cola Mpumalanga trophy.

The school won the provincial finals tournament hosted by Coca-Cola, in conjunction with the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa). This comes after taking on its opponents at the round- robin tournament.

The inaugural competition was held at Elukwatini Stadium on Saturday.
St Marks coach, Sibusiso Chiloane said they were very excited about the win. “We are now looking forward to the national tournament.

Last year we lost out on the semi-finals and this year we are looking to go beyond that stage. We have kept the majority of the players we had last year, and the experience they gained will be valuable this time around,” said Chiloane.

With its win, St Marks completes the provincials’ championship. They will now join other provincial champions such as Haggai Independent Private School, HTS Louis Botha, Zamokuhle Junior Secondary, J.G Zuma High, Are-fahadimeng High, Rosina Sedibane High, Orion High, as well as Desmond Impilo Tutu High School on the Copa Coca-Cola National Finals list.

Chiloane was further named “The Mentor” in Mpumalanga.

He was recognised for being a dedicated and willing coach, who trains kids as young as nine years.

He has shown a spirit of dedication and has been grooming players who have made a difference in their communities.

“Wow. I know that I am a dedicated individual who truly loves to look after the footballers in my community, and as much as people in my community notice my efforts, I didn’t know that other people are also watching me,” said Chiloane.

As part and parcel of the tournament, the “Which part will you play”, was won by Freedom Malamule from Dumpries High School.

Full results: St Marks 0 – 0 Dumphries; St Marks 14 – 0 Kriel, St Marks 1 – 0 Qhubulwazi.
